In my first posted Pokémon artwork, starring Mudkip, I explored using graphics to create a design from an illustration. I hoped this would give the artwork a more unique identity than painting a background or leaving it blank. Continuing with this idea, I wanted to illustrate and create a design of the newly introduced Mega Evolutions for the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mega Hawlucha
In some initial sketches, I looked at portraying Hawlucha in a wide shot, far away, as if they were in a different league. But I noticed the intensity of the character was lost this way, and so I instead focused on creating an interesting and dynamic pose that highlighted its wrestling inspirations. Partway through, I realised this is the first of the Pokémon where I'll have to make use of human anatomy to an extent, and it took many rough passes to get a pose with good gesture and proportions. The final pose I landed on is dynamic and energetic, and the secondary motion of the ribbons and wings helped to make Hawlucha more imposing by expanding its silhouette. However, I still wanted to maintain focus on the head and arms, which was done by making the values darkest around these parts.
While the illustration was great, I knew that the green wing added a lot of weight to the right side of the canvas. To alleviate this in the final design, I used a quad of a similar size to balance out the wing. This created vectors that converged at the bottom and diverged moving up, helping Hawlucha's motion of coming towards the viewer. The part I struggled most with was trying to place the Pokéball icon, and in the end, I decided to create two versions of the design, one with and one without.
