In my first posted Pokémon artwork, starring Mudkip, I explored using graphics to create a design from an illustration. I hoped this would give the artwork a more unique identity than painting a background or leaving it blank. Continuing with this idea, I wanted to illustrate and create a design of the newly introduced Mega Evolutions for the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mega Chesnaught
What started out was a lot of dynamic action poses that would highlight Chesnaught's power and stature. But as I explored the character more, I realised that it's demeanor is something more kingly and noble rather than barbaric, which lead me to draw a pose that was strong and imposing, but was overall composed. The low angle shot would add to its superior standing and foreshortening from this angle would also emphasise the size of its arms. Chesnaught's colour palette is mostly green and white, but its mega evolution gains a cape that introduces a lot more red, often symbolic of strength, adding a touch of warmth to it's cool, steely design, which I would follow through in its shading.
After doing a few of these designs already, I wanted to take a different approach to these next ones that involved the starters. My intent was to design them with aspects of book covers, and with Chesnaught's European inspiration, I added a frame that's reminiscent of the type of regal detailing found on those vintage books.
